Restored 1908 Steinway & Sons Model B | Victorian Art Case Grand Piano
First introduced in 1878, the Steinway Model B has come to be known as the ‘perfect piano.’ Long a favorite of concert pianists, these ‘seven-foot’ grands offer a wonderful range of tone and precise, responsive actions. This vintage Steinway & Sons Model B Grand Piano was crafted in 1908, during the golden age of Steinway Factory quality. This rare, Victorian style instrument features a round arm art case design with double narrow moldings around the case, a detailed figured music desk with ‘new style’ fretwork, hand carved Victorian flowerpot style legs and a large box pedal lyre with carved pillars. The cabinet has been expertly refinished in a closed pore, satin ebony lacquer. This contrasts beautifully with the re-plated, original nickel hardware. Steinway Model B #130551 speaks of the luxury and elegance of a bygone era. This art case instrument is not just a work of visual art, it is also a piano worthy of any performance stage.
The piano’s action has been rebuilt with the finest quality parts including new genuine Steinway wippens and genuine Steinway hammers and new shanks and flanges. A new custom crafted keyset has been installed with new German Kluge style keytops. The original ebony sharps have been sanded and polished for a consistent feel across the keyboard. Our piano technicians have completed extensive action and tone regulation to bring out a responsive touch and the iconic, Steinway tone.
The original damper heads have been refinished and new damper felts have been installed. The damper back action and pedal system have been fully restored. New premium Mapes Gold music wire and custom copper wound bass strings have been fitted to blued tuning pins. These are driven into a new, custom fitted pinblock. A new solid spruce soundboard has been installed for optimum stability and quality of tone. The cast iron plate has been re-bronzed and the raised lettering has been carefully hand detailed. This is an absolutely stunning vintage instrument that will be the centerpiece of any room it is placed in. Art case Steinway Grands of this style were the ‘norm’ during the period in which this piano was built. The late 19th, early 20th century as the time that Steinway truly cemented themselves as the premiere piano builder.
