Richard Cromwell with piano

PianoNation is excited to introduce our new technical director – Richard Cromwell.

Since 1998, piano technician Richard Cromwell, has helped private piano owners, concert venues, conservatories, universities, recording studios, churches, dealers, and rebuilders, around the world to maximize their pianos’ performance potential.

In February 2019 after selling his internationally respected custom piano keyboard manufacturing company, Detroit Pianoworks (now Reyburn Pianoworks), to a major piano tuning software developer, Richard returned to his roots as a concert piano technician and industry consultant by joining the staff of national piano wholesaler and distributor, PianoNation Direct in Wixom, Michigan as our new Technical Director.

Richard Cromwell is a Piano Technicians Guild (PTG) Associate member with over 20 years of piano technology experience and 10 years experience as a Master Craftsman piano key maker. Richard divides his time between taking care of pianos across Metro-Detroit for the clients of his personal piano tuning practice, Aligned Harmonics, in addition to caring for the spectacular collection of new and used pianos at PianoNation Direct in Wixom, Michigan.

Richard is also an exclusive consultant to piano key manufacturers, Reyburn Pianoworks, for acoustic piano key making, and has personally designed and crafted more custom retrofit acoustic piano keyboards than anyone on the planet. He has an A.A.S. in Technological Sciences focusing in CAD and an A.G.S. in General Studies.

In his youth, he studied at both The Recording Institute of Detroit and Wayne State University’s Jazz Studies Program. He has also attended factory training seminars given by several of the world’s most respected piano manufacturers (Steinway & Sons, Yamaha, and Samick), and is a Certified QRS Factory Player Piano System Technology Installer.

In addition to his technical and mechanical expertise pertaining to the piano, Richard is also an accomplished performing and recording musician having played solo and ensemble piano concerts in his hometown of Detroit, New York, as well as throughout Japan.

As an educator, Richard is proud to give back to the piano-trade. He is an in-demand technical presenter and clinician having given well received technical presentations at the PTG National Convention & Technical Institute.

Richard lives in Troy, Michigan, with his wife, two young daughters, two cats, and a piano.
